This is a fantastic find for any history buff. This copper duit – widely known as the “First New York Penny” is handsomely presented by the First Commemorative Mint Inc. in a bifold plastic case with a brief history of New York City and history of the penny. Struck from 1726-1794, this coin came to the present-day island of Manhattan with Dutch traders from the Dutch West India Company. The use of duit coins continued long after the Dutch island of New Amsterdam was ceded to the British and became New York!
This coin originally belonged to a coin collector who stored it in our safe for years. Eventually we acquired his collection in the condition he left it and other than sealing it in plastic it is sold as he left it.
