These gaiters came to us with many WWI items from a collector who sold them just prior to his passing 25+ years ago. They are in fantastic shape but show signs of wear. They resemble early French gaiters.
Gaiters, worn over low cut boots, were first used by European armies in the 1700s as a protective leg covering against the elements and abrasion while walking, hiking, or horseback riding. They are still utilized today, such as these vintage early 1900's hard leather gaiters, to provide protection from brambles, branches, thorns, and even snake bites. Originally made from linen, gaiters evolved to have more durable leather versions as military tactics and field dress advanced.
Features of the Gaiters:
- Condition: Previously Owned - Very Good (some leather damage - mostly on the one that has been slipped into the other for storage)
- Closures: Leather buckles work great at the top of the gaiters to expand as needed. and metal bottom closures in good shape
- Year of Manufacture: Unknown
- Approximately 12" H x 5.5" D around calf and 3.5" D around ankle
