This Australian Army Wool Felt Slouch Hat, officially designated as "Hat, Khaki, Fur Felt," has a long history dating back to the Victorian Mounted Rifles and their observations of Burmese police headwear. Originally, the Slouch hat was a bush felt hat that could be turned up on one side to avoid interference during the "Shoulder Arms" drill movement. It includes a seven pleat "Puggaree" and "Rising Sun Badge," a traditional Indian head-wrap adapted by the British for hot, sunny climates. The seven pleats represent the states and territories of Australia, while the "Rising Sun Badge" has been proudly worn by Australian soldiers since 1902. This reproduction features the 5th pattern badge used between 1966 and 1972 with the approval of the Australian "Department of Defense."
