This coin is in a protective plastic flip cover and zippered plastic bag, coming from Larry Hahn's personal collection left to him by a very dear friend. Despite minimal toning, the coin retains its fantastic condition with beautiful color and luster. A neodymium magnet test confirms its authenticity as the magnet does not stick.
The Austrian Maria Theresa taler was a valuable trade currency with the Levant and became the preferred silver coin in the Arabian world. After her death, Joseph II allowed it to be struck in Günzburg (now in Bavaria) to meet demand in the Middle East. The "Levantine taler" was accepted by Arab traders and continues to be struck at mints in Vienna, Prague, Milan, and Venice. It was even resturck in London, Bombay, Paris, and Rome, and is still found in Arabian bazaars today. Although it lost its legal tender status in Austria in 1858, it is still produced by the mint in Vienna.
