It has been carefully safeguarded since its acquisition, serving as a commemorative coin to pay tribute to the 38th anniversary of the July 27, 1953 signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which brought an end to three years of conflict between North Korean communists led by Kim Il Sung (with support from the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union) and South Korean authoritarian Syngman Rhee, who gained power with the backing of the United States.
