Martin Van Buren (December 5, 1782 - July 24, 1862) was the 8th president of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841. Known as a founding member of the Democratic Party, he served as New York's attorney general, U.S. Senator, and briefly as the 9th Governor of New York before joining Andrew Jackson's administration as the 10th United States Secretary of State. He was also minister to Great Britain and became the 8th Vice President from 1833 to 1837, winning the election on Jackson's ticket in 1832. Despite defeating divided Whig opponents in the 1836 election, Van Buren lost his re-election campaign in 1840 and failed to secure the Democratic nomination in 1844. In his later years, he became an influential statesman and leader in the anti-slavery movement, running for president on the Free Soil Party ticket.
