As an elected official during the 1840s and 1850s, Johnson advocated for a homestead bill to provide economically disadvantaged men with free land. In 1864, the Republican Party chose Johnson, a Democrat, as their candidate for vice president. Following President Lincoln's assassination, Johnson pursued a more moderate approach to rebuilding the southern states. However, Radical Republicans in Congress had their own agenda and imposed military rule on the southern states. They also passed laws that limited the President’s powers. When Johnson was accused of violating the Tenure of Office Act by firing Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, the House of Representatives brought forth 11 articles of impeachment against him.
