James Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, was born in 1831 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts and then became a classics professor and president at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later Hiram College) in Ohio. In his political career, he was elected to the Ohio state senate in 1859 and then to Congress in 1862, where he served for 18 years. The 2011-P & D 1881 James Garfield $1 Coin (7891) honors his unexpected Republican nomination and narrow victory by 10,000 popular votes. During his short time in office, Garfield successfully appointed a new leader for the Port of New York, defeating Senator Roscoe Conkling. Tragically, after only six months in office, Garfield was assassinated.
I do not know if these coins were ever circulated or not and they have not been graded. Each Coin Sold Separately.

- Date and mint mark are located on the edge inscription of the coin along with the mottoes “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”
