This coin is in a protective guardhouse flip cover and zippered plastic bag, coming from Larry Hahn's personal collection left to him by a very dear friend. The sides of this coin show the common metal stress from the force of it being struck - which commonly helps prove the authenticity of an ancient coin.

Flavius Valens, who was born around 328, was appointed Emperor by his brother Valentinian. He negotiated a peace treaty with the Goths in 370, which included their agreement to not cross the Danube. However, the Goths rebelled in 377 and Valens was forced to lead a large army to confront them. Tragically, he was defeated near Hadrianople on August 9th, 378 and was never seen again.
