This Bicentennial S Proof Half Dollar Coin is in excellent (almost mint) collectable condition (some toning). It was acquired from a cherished collector who entrusted it to my father before his passing.
Shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the US Mint responded with an expedited release of the new Kennedy Half Dollar, replacing the Franklin Half Dollar. The design, already in existence by sculptors Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro, allowed the Philadelphia Mint to produce over 273 million brilliant uncirculated coins in just 30 days. Upon their debut in March of 1964, the entire collection was quickly depleted from the market. Collectors eagerly collected thousands of these historically significant coins, while others sought after their 90% silver content. The Mint attempted to increase production, but the demand was insatiable. 1964 also marked the end of the US Mint's use of 90% silver in coins, with a change to 40% metal content, which may have contributed to the fervent desire to hoard these coins.
