In June of 1944, a massive operation involved 160,000 Allied troops landing on a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany in Normandy. This coordinated attack, coined Operation Overlord, utilized over 5,000 ships, 11,000 aircraft, and 150,000 men from 12 different countries. Despite suffering nearly 10,000 casualties, including 4,000 fatalities, precise planning and immense bravery led to the securing of the beaches and the beginning of a victorious march across Europe. The U.S. Mint has since issued commemorative silver dollars, bearing the dual dates of 1991-1995, as a tribute to the "Greatest Generation" and all those who served in World War II. These 90% pure silver coin feature a powerful image of a U.S. soldier landing on the shores of Normandy during the D-Day invasion, making them prized collectibles among history enthusiasts.
